In Portugal, there are three types of recognition:

AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION

This is the act that allows the generic recognition of a foreign higher education degree or diploma, whose level, objectives, and nature are identical to the Portuguese degrees of bachelor's, master's, and doctorate or to the diploma of professional higher technician, as listed by the commission for the recognition of foreign degrees and diplomas. Check here to see if your course may be subject to this process.

LEVEL RECOGNITION

This is the act that allows the recognition, through comparability and on an individual basis, of a foreign higher education degree or diploma as having a level corresponding to a Portuguese academic degree or higher education diploma.

SPECIFIC RECOGNITION

This is the act that allows the recognition of a foreign higher education degree or diploma as identical to a Portuguese academic degree or higher education diploma, through a case-by-case analysis of the level, duration, and course content, within a specific field of study, branch of knowledge, or speciality.

To find out which type of recognition may apply to your diploma, please consult the information available here.

Recognition, regardless of its type and the institution where you wish to submit your request, must be requested by the diploma holder on the website of the Directorate-General for Higher Education, by filling in this online form.
