In order to apply, students must meet the following requirements:

a) to hold a Portuguese secondary education diploma OR a legally equivalent qualification (see the foreign diplomas accepted here)

b) to have taken the Portuguese national secondary education examinations in 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023 or 2022 and to have achieved in these examinations a mark equal to 95 points or higher (on a scale of 0 to 200 points) OR a foreign diploma's final examination considered equivalent. (see the foreign exams accepted here)

This regime does not apply to students with International Student Status (as defined in Decree-Law 36/2014 of 10th March and ruled by NR/R/0105/2019 of 7th March, which publishes the Implementing Regulation of the International Student Status of Universidade Católica Portuguesa).

Application score (for ranking purposes): 50% of the secondary education diploma’s grade + 50% of the final exams (25% each exam). Minimum total application grade of 100.0 points (in a 0 to 200 grading scale). 

ESB reserves itself the right to set a minimum application grade higher than 100 points in each application call depending on the quality of the results achieved by applicants.

Special Quota[1]:

Intended for candidates who are disabled (1), high-performance sports practitioners (1), emigrants and Portuguese descendants (1). More information here.

To apply, students must present:

Depending on whether they hold a Portuguese secondary education diploma (a) or an legally equivalent foreign diploma (b):

  • (a) ENES Form (Exames Nacionais do Ensino Secundário) issued in 2026 – if not provided at the time of application, the original document must be presented on registration
  • (b)  Foreign secondary education diploma[1] + certificate attesting the score achieved in the final examination (see the tab "Check if you are eligible") considered equivalent[1] + certificate of equivalence to the Portuguese secondary education diploma (to be request in a portuguese secondary education school) (see the foreign diplomas accepted here)
  • Copy of Identification Document
  • Declaration of Eligibility
  • Application form for special quota  (if applicable)
  • Special Education Needs Form (if applicable)
  • Students who have already attended a higher education course and wish to apply for equivalence of prior learning, are required to submit their transcripts with the subjects successfully completed in higher education (including marks and workload) as well as the subjects’ syllabus/content.

[1] Documents issued in foreign countries need to be certified by the Portuguese diplomatic representation (or consulate) in the country where the document is issued, or bear the Hague Apostille stamp. When written in foreign languages other than Spanish, English or French, these documents must be translated into Portuguese, according to the Portuguese notary laws. The original documents must be presented on registration (if not previously provided).

Applicants holding a secondary school diploma issued by a foreign education institution whose results are not available until after the end of the 1st and/or 2nd application calls must contact admissions.porto@ucp.pt.

In order to apply, students must cumulatively meet the following requirements:

  • Having been registered in a different institution/course in a previous academic years but not having completed it. Students are not required to have successfully completed any of the subjects attended at their home education institution.

  • Having taken a foreign diploma's final examination considered equivalent, in any previous academic year, and having achieved a mark equal to 95 points or higher on a scale of 0 to 200 (see the foreign diplomas accepted here)

Selection criteria: When the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants will be ranked according to the Final mark achieved at secondary school, the final examination marks and the academic performance in higher education.

Students who satisfy the cumulatively legal conditions described below may apply under this regime:

  • Being at least 23 years old on the 31st of December 2025

  • not have the qualifications required to access higher education under another regimen

Applicants will have to take a special test, at the Faculty of Biotechnology, covering the following areas:

  • Mathematics

 a) Area and volume calculation

 b) Basic Trigonometry

 c) Graphs' and tables' analysis

 d) Elementary arithmetic calculations

  •  Biology

 a) General organization of cells

 b) evolution; evolutionary agents

 c) Cellular respiration

  •  Chemistry

 a) Constitution of matter (atoms, molecules, ions)

 b) Adjustment of chemical equations

In addition to these areas, the written test also includes the ability of interpretation and written expression, either in Portuguese or in English.

Applicants who achieve a mark lower than 10 points (on a 0 to 20 scale) on the written text shall be eliminated. When approved, applicants will have to take an interview.

Ranking and selection for the Undergraduate Degrees will take into consideration the mark attained in the exam, as well as the applicant’s motivation (to be assessed during the interview) and Curriculum Vitae or resume.
